Homemade Carpet Powder

You can easily find ingredients to use in place of chemicals and do it yourself. Apart from baking soda and borax, the other components may vary depending on the stain and odor you want to get rid of and the smell you want to give to your carpet.

Baking soda helps to loosen dirt from carpet fibers while borax helps to kill fleas and mites

Mix 1

  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon lemon peel
  • 1 teaspoon lavender flowers (organic)
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 10 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • Add some herbs to the mix.

Powdered lavender has antibacterial properties and will provide a fresh scent. Grinding it using a coffee grinder or buying the powdered form will make things easier.

Lemon peel has antiseptic, disinfectant and antibacterial properties. It’s also a degreaser that helps to remove oil stains from the carpet.

Sprinkle the powder mix on a dry carpet and leave it overnight. Do not use on wet carpet. Use your hands to move the powder deeper into the carpet.  You can then vacuum the powder, after like 12 hours. If the carpet is a stinker, you will have to leave the powder longer.

Mix 2

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon powdered cloves
  • 1 cup dry mint (rosemary, bay leaves, thyme can also be used)
  • 1 tablespoon borax

Mix the ingredients to obtain a homogeneous mixture. Corn starch absorbs dirt, cloves will remove bad odors, and borax acts as a disinfectant and a cleanser.

All the powder is sprinkled and thoroughly fed into the carpet. You can use a brush to ensure that the cleaning powder carefully enters the carpet fibers. Vacuum the carpet the next day until all the corn starch disappears.
